Over the last x years, many of my attempts to purge the house of unwanted paper have been sabotaged by a certain paranoid member of the family who refuses to throw away any piece of paper with an address on it. Just around the corner are lurking shrewd criminals intent on stealing our identities and everything we have. Thus around the house there are usually various receptacles containing unwanted papers - with a vague plan to take them to work to dispose of them properly (i.e. shred them) sometime.

And now, the Appliance family with whom we struggle for dominance of our household, has a new member:

The Shredder.

The kids love it (all four of 'em). Lauren actually thought he'd bought it just for the entertainment aspect - this cool machine which sucks in pieces of paper and produces funky paper strips.

Peter's unearthing boxes and packets of paper I didn't even know about. He hides them to prevent me chucking them out behind his back.

What can I say, I live to provide material for this blog.

Have the kids tried putting any silk ties etc into the shredder?

We have a shredder and a pulper. The pulper is more effective - she's about 6 months old and able to process more sheets at a time these days.

Wouldn't burning be more final, and also have a nice symbolic flavour to it?

I mean, any identity thief with a bit of spirit could surely put those strips back together?
