Good Wednesday

Today was a Wednesday with a difference. It is National Heritage Day, so most of the family had the day off. Poor Robyn, who goes to a school with a percentage of boarders, had to attend school as they tend to treat public holidays as school days if they don't fall conveniently on a Monday or Friday. She enjoys school though, so was quite happy about it, especially as the day was set aside as a fun day to celebrate the holiday - with the theme of the day being zulu culture. It was a good thing she didn't get any homework, as we surprised her at 1pm (school was an hour shorter than usual) by roaring into the car park with all of us in the car, complete with packed lunch and four bikes loaded on the bike rack. And off we went to the mountain bike park for the afternoon.

On the way we attempted to find a quicker route than the one we normally use, and Peter hopefully switched on the gps navigator on his phone. I don't have much patience with these things. The most helpful and memorable instruction of the trip was: "Make a U turn, and then, make a U turn." Give me a map book any day. At least it never tells me to "Turn left now" while doing 120km/h down the freeway.

It was Peter's turn to ride with the kids today, and I stayed with the boys while Danny rode on the small ramps and obstacles, and Stevie filled two coke cans with dirt. Actually Danny rode a little way along the track the other three went on, and I accompanied him on foot until I got too tired carrying Stephen and we had to turn back. Judging from Dan's competence today, it is definitely time to get organised with another adult bike and a baby seat. In fact an acquaintance has one she's trying to sell, and we tried it on the bike today, but it doesn't fit unfortunately. Looks like I'll have to go after a new one. Hmmm... not sure how Stephen is going to react to wearing a helmet. Can one even get a helmet to fit a one-year-old?
