I have just experienced one of the most intensely heavenly baths of my life. Second only, I think, to the shower I had shortly after giving birth to each of the children.

Today I ... got the cast off!

What a huge, huge relief. And as an extra early Christmas present, I don't have to wear a boot or anything. The doctor originally said that I could probably switch to a boot after four weeks, and use it for the last two weeks. Today was 3 weeks and 4 days, so I kind of rounded up and hoped he wouldn't argue. I could have bought him dinner when he said I didn't need anything else. Perhaps they routinely give you a larger sentence than they're actually planning to enforce, so just when you're about ready to gnaw your own limb off they can save you the bother and release you from the damn thing.

Cutting off the cast involved a rather threatening device resembling an angle-grinder. The kids were fascinated. Worryingly, the only thing between my leg and this large, noisy, lethal-looking tool were a plastic ruler and something resembling an ice-cream stick.

All were most impressed by my crop of blisters, which measures 8 by 5 cm. It was a bit gruesome. The wonderful clinic sister bravely washed my foot, hacked a lot of loose dead skin off the bottom of it, and rubbed in some lotion. I could have bought her dinner, too.

So. Hoping for a hot, hot afternoon tomorrow. I'll be in the pool with the kids!

What else?

All is currently quiet on the polygraph front. Not sure when it will be happening.

Oh, something very cool and totally unexpected happened at the weekend. This has only happened to us once before. Some friends asked us to be godparents to their baby daughter. She's almost two. The baptism is scheduled for 31st December. Much of our godparenting experience to date (both as godparents and parents of godchildren) has been sort of remote with an ocean or two in between. This is a chance to be a bit more hands-on. I feel privileged to have been asked.
